The Ghana Police Service has dismantled a dangerous armed robbery gang responsible for a series of attacks on rural banks across the country.
This was announced by the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, at a press conference held at the National Police Headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, September 24.
According to the IGP, the breakthrough follows months of investigations into a string of robberies targeting financial institutions, particularly rural banks. The pattern of the crimes led police to launch a targeted operation across several regions, including Ashanti, Ahafo, Western, Central, and Eastern.
The operation was conducted in multiple towns such as Esereso Adagya, Ejisu Achiaakrom, Atonsu-Kyirapatre, Ahwia-Zongo, Aputuogya-Abuontem, Kaase-BOST, Asuofua, Atonsu-Monaco, Pakyi, Obuasi, and Buoho near Kronum.
Dr. Yohuno confirmed that 10 suspects have been arrested, while three others were killed during a shootout with police. A manhunt is currently underway to capture the remaining suspects who are on the run.
Police also recovered a cache of weapons and other items from the gang, including:
* 14 firearms (AK-47 rifles, pump-action guns, pistols, a single-barrel gun)
* Ammunition
* Vehicles
* Mobile phones and other exhibits
The IGP praised the efforts of the Ashanti Regional Police Command and other officers involved in the operation, as well as members of the public who provided crucial information.
“I wish to sincerely thank members of the public who volunteered credible information to the police that contributed to this breakthrough,” Dr. Yohuno said. “We will continue to pursue all criminal elements until they are brought to justice.”
The police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, assuring citizens of their ongoing commitment to public safety.
