The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) President, Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has lauded the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) for its continued commitment to public service broadcasting, independence, and national development. Mr. Dwumfour made these remarks during his goodwill message at GBC’s 90th anniversary lecture held at the GTV Studios in Accra on Thursday, July 31, 2025.
The event, themed “GBC, Ninety Years of Impact – The Authentic and Trusted Voice of Ghana,” brought together key stakeholders in the media and communications landscape to reflect on GBC’s rich legacy and future direction.
In his address, Mr. Dwumfour praised GBC for being a model of public broadcasting, stating that its unique mandate as a state-owned but editorially independent media organization has supported Ghana’s democracy since its inception. He commended GBC for training journalists and technicians, contributing to the broader media industry, and providing high-quality, informative, and educational content.
The GJA President highlighted GBC’s role in fostering community development, social cohesion, and civic responsibility, as well as its dedication to preserving Ghanaian culture, promoting inclusion, and ensuring accountability. He also credited GBC with being a vital educational tool for generations of Ghanaians and a beacon of knowledge dissemination, even in remote areas.
The 90th anniversary lecture was delivered by Dr. Victoria Smith, a lecturer in Public History at Bath Spa University in the UK, who provided historical insights into the establishment of national radio broadcasting in Ghana. The ceremony also featured a cultural performance, a poetry recital, and reflections from past and present GBC staff.
In conclusion, Mr. Dwumfour reaffirmed the GJA’s commitment to supporting GBC and public broadcasting in general, emphasizing the importance of institutions like GBC in promoting democracy and national development.
