IGP launches shake-up in mining flashpoints

The Ghana Police Service has stepped up its fight against illegal mining with a major reshuffle of police commanders in galamsey-prone areas and a successful four-day anti-mining operation in the Western Region.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno ordered the shake-up affecting Divisional and District Commanders across the Eastern South, Western, and Western North regions.

According to Police, the move is part of a broader strategy to inject renewed leadership and enhance effectiveness in areas heavily impacted by illegal mining.

“This is just the first phase,” a police statement said, hinting at further changes in the coming weeks as part of efforts to strengthen oversight and accountability in the enforcement of anti-galamsey measures.

Meanwhile, a four-day intelligence-led operation within the Samreboi enclave, which began on April 17, has resulted in the arrest of 47 individuals allegedly involved in illegal mining activities along the Tano River and within the Aboi, Subri, and Nimiri forest reserves.

Among those arrested are 39 Ghanaians and eight Chinese nationals, including four women.
