Bawku Under Curfew After Deadly Violence

The Government has imposed a strict curfew on Bawku in response to escalating violence that has claimed at least eight lives and raised serious concerns over public safety.
The curfew, effective from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM daily, was announced in a statement by the Ministry of Interior on October 28, 2024, following an emergency National Security meeting chaired by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The unrest stems from the October 24 return of Mr. Seidu Abagre to Bawku, who was controversially enskinned as Bawku Naba in February 2023.
Although this title lacked legal recognition, his presence has intensified disputes between factions, leading to multiple clashes.
Onlookers say that as tensions flared, at least eight people were killed over the past few days, and security agencies are working to contain the violence and prevent further escalation.
The Interior Ministry described Mr Abagre’s continued presence as a threat to the peace and safety of Bawku and surrounding areas.
After reviewing the situation, authorities imposed the curfew under the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491). Security forces have been directed to enforce the curfew rigorously to maintain order.
This recent spate of violence follows months of simmering tension and several clashes over chieftaincy disputes in the area, which have frequently erupted into confrontations.
The Police on Monday disclosed that the presence of security personnel has been strengthened, and additional measures are being taken to prevent further loss of life.
The government called on residents to comply with the curfew hours, adhere to law enforcement directives, and cooperate fully with security personnel.
The Deputy Minister for Interior Hon. Naana Eyiah who signed the statement on behalf of the Minister for the Interior added that violators will face severe legal repercussions.
