NPP Leader Calls for Calm, Unity as Running Mate Decision Looms

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader in Parliament, has cautioned his fellow NPP MPs and party supporters against infighting and negative remarks about each other. With the 2024 elections approaching and the running mate selection still pending, Afenyo-Markin emphasized the importance of unity and urged colleagues to be mindful of their public statements.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, he encouraged MPs to be measured in their language and avoid criticizing each other. He acknowledged that no one is perfect and that the party’s decision will be made through consultation and consensus.
“We’ve all heard rumors about the running mate, but no decision has been made yet. Let’s wait for the party structures to announce the decision,” Afenyo-Markin said. “We’re in this together, and we need to support each other. Let’s be careful how we describe each other, how we say things about our colleagues, and the language we use. It may not be helpful.”
Afenyo-Markin’s remarks come after reports surfaced that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia had chosen Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) as his running mate, subject to President Akufo-Addo’s approval. However, some party members, like Andy Appiah-Kubi, have expressed disapproval of the choice, citing concerns about NAPO’s ability to campaign effectively and connect with the party’s base.
Afenyo-Markin assured his colleagues that Dr. Bawumia, in consultation with party elders, will make a decision that benefits the party and all involved. He emphasized the need for unity and urged MPs to support each other, rather than engaging in infighting and negative commentary.
“The party’s decision will be made with the best interest of the NPP and Ghana in mind. Let’s trust the process and support each other,” he said. “We need to focus on the bigger picture, which is winning the 2024 elections and continuing our good work for Ghana.”
