NPP group kicks against Opoku Prempeh’s nomination as Bawumia’s running mate

A group of concerned members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has petitioned the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) to reconsider the selection of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate for Dr. Bawumia. The group, known as Concerned NPP Grassroot and Executives Group, claims that imposing Dr. Opoku Prempeh on Dr. Bawumia would not serve the party’s interest in the upcoming election.
The group marched to Dr. Bawumia’s campaign office in Kumasi, holding placards with inscriptions such as “We want a humble and approachable running mate” and “Opoku Prempeh is not the right choice.” They argued that Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s behavior as Energy Minister, including his response to Ghanaians during a period of power instability, demonstrated a lack of humility and respect.
The group’s convener, Ebenezer Nyamekye, stated that they are seeking a running mate who is humble and approachable, like Dr. Bawumia, to promote the party’s image. They believe that Dr. Opoku Prempeh does not possess these qualities and therefore should not be considered as the running mate.
The petition was received by the Ashanti Regional Communications Officer of the NPP, Paul Yandoh, who promised to forward it to the appropriate quarters for further action. The NEC is holding an emergency meeting to decide on the flagbearer’s choice of running mate.
The group is urging the NEC to listen to their concerns and consider their plea for a different running mate. They believe that their efforts will help the party achieve its goal of “breaking the 8” and winning the election.
