Gov’t allocates additional funds for flood control — Ato Forson

The government has provided additional funding to support ongoing dredging works following devastating floods that affected parts of the country last month.

The Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, announced the intervention while presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament on Thursday, July 23.

He said the funding forms part of the government’s response to the impact of the floods, which resulted in deaths, displacement of families, destruction of businesses and damage to public infrastructure.

“Before I proceed with this Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review, I wish to acknowledge the devastating floods that struck parts of our country last month. On the direction of His Excellency the President John Dramani Mahama, I am making available additional resources for ongoing dredging and construction of critical drains in the affected areas,” Dr Forson said.

“Mr Speaker, as Honourable Members will recall, the floods claimed lives, displaced families, destroyed businesses and caused extensive damage to public infrastructure.”

He noted that Ghana was not the only country affected by the flooding, as similar incidents were recorded in Nigeria, La Côte d’Ivoire and Sierra Leone, highlighting the increasing flood risks along the West African coastline due to climate change.

According to the Finance Minister, the government responded by visiting affected communities, releasing funds for emergency relief and launching a nationwide clean-up exercise.

He added that additional resources had been made available to support dredging activities aimed at addressing flooding risks and improving drainage systems across the country.
