MTN Home Driving Ghana’s Digital Future with High-Speed Fibre Broadband

MTN Ghana’s Chief Home Officer, Richard Acheampong, says the company’s investment in high-speed fibre broadband is transforming home connectivity and accelerating Ghana’s digital future, while calling for stronger protection of the country’s telecommunications infrastructure.

Speaking at the MTN Home Edition of Bright Conversations held at MTN House in Accra as part of MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary celebrations, Mr. Acheampong said MTN Home is redefining the way Ghanaian households connect by providing fast, reliable and affordable internet services that support remote work, online learning, video streaming, gaming, video conferencing and smart home technologies.

The event, moderated by tech entrepreneur and music producer Kobby Spiky Nkrumah, examined the impact of the MTN Fibre Network on homes and businesses, as well as the future of digital connectivity in Ghana.

Mr. Acheampong said MTN Home forms an integral part of MTN Ghana’s Ambition 2030 strategy, which is anchored on three strategic pillars—Connectivity, Fintech and Digital Infrastructure—and is designed to meet the increasing digital needs of families and businesses.

However, he warned that frequent fibre cuts caused by road construction continue to threaten reliable internet service delivery across the country.

According to him, MTN records more than 300 fibre cuts every month, most of them caused by ongoing road construction activities.

He said the company currently provides home internet services to approximately 250,000 households through MTN Fibre Broadband, Yellow Home and the former Turbonet service, with about 180,000 customers connected through fibre infrastructure alone.

Mr. Acheampong therefore renewed MTN Ghana’s call for fibre infrastructure to be recognised as critical national infrastructure, stressing that internet connectivity now underpins essential sectors, including education, healthcare, banking, commerce and public services.

“If internet services were unavailable for just two hours, every Ghanaian would feel the impact. As a country, we need to recognise telecommunications infrastructure as critical national infrastructure,” he said.

He explained that MTN works closely with road contractors before construction begins to identify the location of underground fibre cables and prevent accidental damage. The company has also invested in resilient network architecture that automatically reroutes traffic whenever fibre lines are cut, helping to minimise service interruptions.

Mr. Acheampong disclosed that MTN is collaborating with the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, the National Communications Authority (NCA) and other stakeholders to strengthen measures aimed at safeguarding fibre infrastructure nationwide.

Touching on the benefits of MTN Home, he said the service provides affordable data, voice and video solutions for households and delivers uninterrupted streaming, crystal-clear video conferencing, faster downloads and low-latency online gaming.

He dismissed the perception that fibre broadband is expensive, explaining that a single fibre connection can support up to 50 devices simultaneously without compromising speed or performance, making it ideal for homes where several people are working, studying, streaming or gaming at the same time.

Mr. Acheampong encouraged more households to embrace fibre broadband, noting that reliable internet has become an essential utility comparable to electricity and water.

On affordability, he said MTN continues to lower barriers to access by offering free fibre installation and customer premises equipment at no additional cost, while introducing speed-based broadband packages starting from GH¢299 for 100 Mbps.

He also acknowledged the role of regulators in MTN’s growth, saying the NCA and other regulatory institutions continue to provide the spectrum, policy direction and regulatory support required to deliver quality telecommunications services across the country.

Responding to customer concerns over network performance, Mr. Acheampong assured subscribers that MTN continuously monitors service quality and investigates reports of slow internet speeds, network congestion, airtime deductions and missing data bundles.

He advised customers experiencing service-related challenges to contact MTN Customer Care through 111, where each complaint is investigated and resolved individually.

Mr. Acheampong reaffirmed MTN Ghana’s commitment to expanding digital infrastructure, improving customer experience and working with government, regulators and private sector partners to deliver reliable broadband services that will support Ghana’s digital transformation for years to come.

The MTN Home Edition of Bright Conversations formed part of activities marking MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary, providing a platform for discussions on the future of home broadband, digital infrastructure and innovation in Ghana.
