Ban Surface Mining: Okatakyi Prof. Amanfi VII to Gov’t

The Omanhene of Asebu Traditional Area, Okatakyi Prof. Amanfi VII, has called on the government to ban surface mining in Ghana, citing the devastating impact it has on the environment and the nation’s natural resources.

Speaking at the Silver Jubilee Celebration of his enstoolment and the Apayemkese Festival, he lamented that the situation has reached a critical point, with rivers and water bodies being polluted and forests and farmlands being destroyed.

“The destructive and harmful nature of surface mining in our country is a pressing issue that demands immediate attention,” Okatakyi Prof. Amanfi VII said. “We cannot continue to sacrifice our environment and natural resources for short-term gains. It’s time for us to make a choice: either we limit mining to underground operations or face the devastating consequences of surface mining.”

The traditional leader condemned the activities of illegal miners, many of whom are foreigners, saying their actions are unsustainable and pose a threat to the nation’s existence. “Their primitive methods and blatant disregard for the environment are alarming,” he said. “It’s imperative that government takes drastic action to stop these destructive activities and protect our nation.”

Okatakyi Prof. Amanfi VII called for strong leadership to address the issue, emphasizing that the nation needs decisive action to safeguard its natural resources and environment.

On his part, The Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, also urged traditional rulers across the country to unite in fostering national cohesion and development.
