ShattaFest 2025: A Wild Night That Boosted Accra’s Economy — Next Year Must Be Executed Better

Mel Kwesi Davis - a creative industry analyst, writer and events management strategist. He focuses on the intersection of music, culture and economic impact across Africa’s creative economy.

Accra, Ghana! I was at the Independence Square on Friday evening before the big show, watching crews hammer, hoist and wire up what was clearly going to be one of the city’s biggest nights of the year. You could feel the energy before it even started.

Fast forward to Saturday around 5pm, in a white and jeans paired with my Kickers sneaker boots (yeah I’m old school🫣😜) and the Independence Square was already vibrating. Fans draped in white, vendors hustling, speakers blaring, the Shatta Movement had turned Accra into a festival city. By the time PZEEFIRE performed, the place was electric. I left shortly after to return later but not before witnessing how massive the night had become.

Earlier that day, I was live on Asaase Pa 107.3 FM, and I mentioned two things the organisers are doing and should improve: more water stations and more visible security. Hours later, both points proved absolutely necessary.

Let’s be honest, Shatta Wale and his team pulled off something remarkable.
ShattaFest 2025, branded this year as “Shattabration” and powered by MTN MoMo, wasn’t just a concert. It was an economic celebration.

From coconut sellers to Shaxi drivers, food vendors, hotel staff and MoMo merchants, everybody made money. The city buzzed. Even people who couldn’t make it to the Square felt the pulse through livestreams and social chatter.

Based on attendance and spending patterns, the festival likely injected between GHC 20 million and GHC 30 million into Accra’s economy over the weekend, higher than I earlier estimated.
That figure includes setups. crews, fuel, accommodation, transport, food, street trade and sponsorship activations. In a city where live events are a growing economic sector, that’s serious impact.

A free-entry concert of this scale, managed with major brand partnerships and local vendors, shows just how powerful Ghana’s creative economy can be when the stars align.

But Here are a few things we need work on….I mentioned a few of them in my analysis after Rapperholic in Kumasi.
Water was hard to find. Security presence thinned out as the crowd thickened. Medical and sanitation support weren’t as visible as they should have been.

When you pack tens of thousands of people into an open-air venue under tropical heat, hydration is not optional. Its is safety.

So here’s my simple challenge to the organisers, Charterhouse and the new Shatta Movement team:
Next year, double the water stations, add more visible crowd marshals, set up multiple first-aid tents and plan transport dispersal with the GPRTU.

After the event, I noticed Buzstop Boys – waste management and sanitation crews have sprang into action to clean the venue – very proactive. The brand is evolving and so should the operations.
Crowd Control
Event Security
Stage and VIP management

Handled right, ShattaFest could easily become Ghana’s version of Coachella, a yearly cultural and economic magnet.

Events like this feed local industries: food, logistics, tech, media, hospitality, and creative production. Each concert isn’t just a night of music; it’s a mini economic engine. With stronger planning, the 2026 edition could easily double the returns and attract tourists beyond our borders.

From Friday’s setup to Saturday’s fireworks, ShattaFest 2025 proved that Ghana’s event culture is alive, profitable and globally ready.
Shatta Wale has evolved from “On God” to wearing his “Street Crown” with pride and this movement has become a symbol of unity, energy and ambition.

But as I said on Asaase Pa 107.3, next year let’s channel the same creative passion we pour into the stage into logistics and safety.
Because when artistry meets organisation, Accra doesn’t just party, it makes history.

There are so many other parts of this Event I will write about and publish later.

  • The African Connection to ShattaFest
  • Food bank, MTN MOMO, Shaxi – The economics of multiplier effect.
  • ShattaFest – Performances and Floor Management.

CONGRATULATIONS TO SHATTA WALE AND SM FANS – KING FOR A REASON!!!🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾👌🏾
