Baffoe-Bonnie nominated as next Chief Justice

President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie for consideration as the next Chief Justice of Ghana.
In a statement issued by the Presidency on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, President Mahama said the nomination was in line with Article 144(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates the President to forward the name of a candidate to the Council of State for advice.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, a distinguished jurist with decades of service, has risen through the judicial ranks, serving at the High Court, Court of Appeal, and currently the Supreme Court. He has been acting as Chief Justice since April 22, 2025, following the removal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
The Presidency highlighted his reputation for diligence, integrity, and impartiality, noting that his “wealth of experience and long service on the Bench render him eminently qualified for the high office of Chief Justice.”
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie is widely respected within the Bench and Bar for his intellect, fairness, and contribution to Ghanaian jurisprudence. His nomination is expected to proceed to the Council of State for consideration before formal approval.
The appointment of a new Chief Justice comes at a time of heightened public interest in judicial independence.
