The Bono Regional Minister has officially launched a critical four day training programme for the newly formed National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) Task Force, marking a significant escalation in the government’s campaign against illegal mining, popularly known as ‘galamsey’.

Speaking at the opening ceremony on Tuesday, the Minister underscored the devastating impact of galamsey, which has destroyed river bodies, degraded vast forest reserves, and threatened the nation’s food security. He stated that the situation demands decisive and immediate action from the government.

The newly established Task Force, comprising over 300 personnel drawn from the Ghana Armed Forces, Police Service, Immigration Service, National Investigations Bureau, and the Narcotics Control Commission, has been mandated to enforce mining laws, protect the environment, and restore the integrity of the nation’s lands.

“This training is of utmost importance to the success of the task force,” the Minister declared. “It will equip you not only with the operational skills you need, but also with the understanding that your duty goes beyond enforcement. It is about protecting lives, livelihoods, and the very future of our environment.”

He commended the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, and his ministry for their leadership in establishing the initiative, emphasizing that the programme underscores the government’s strong resolve to end illegal mining and safeguard Ghana’s natural heritage for generations to come.

The Minister urged the task force members to approach the training with the utmost seriousness, noting that the success of their national mission will hinge on their professionalism, discipline, and unity.

“As we begin this training, let us keep in mind that protecting our environment is not just a legal responsibility, but also a duty to posterity. We must ensure that the rivers, forests, and lands we inherited are preserved for future generations,” he charged the personnel.

Echoing the Minister’s sentiments, the Director of Operations for the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat, pledged the full commitment of the task force. He expressed confidence in the personnel’s readiness for the challenge ahead.

“We wish to affirm our willingness and zeal to ensure the fight against illegal mining is pursued relentlessly,” the Director stated. “Together with our men, we will work diligently and with the highest level of professionalism to ensure this mission is a successful one.”

The intensive training is designed to prepare the unit for coordinated and sustained operations aimed at dismantling illegal mining networks across the country.
