Ridge Hospital assault: Nurse suffered no fracture or shoulder dislocation – Committee

The committee set up to investigate the violent altercation at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge) has revealed that the nurse at the centre of the case, Rejoice Tsotso Bortei, did not suffer the injuries she claimed.

Presenting its report to Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh on Wednesday, August 27, the committee’s chairman, Dr. Lawrence Ofori, emphasised that thorough investigations showed no evidence of a fractured wrist or dislocated shoulder, as alleged by the nurse.

“There was no evidence of fracture of her left wrist or dislocation of her right shoulder joint as documented by the medical records,” he said.

The development comes as Bortei has already filed a lawsuit against activist Ralph Saint Williams, popularly known as “Ralph De Fellow Ghanaian.” In a writ filed at the High Court in Accra on August 20, 2025, she is seeking GHS 7 million in damages, GHS 5 million for battery and GHS 2 million for defamation.

Bortei alleges that Williams physically assaulted her during the chaos at the hospital’s emergency ward on August 17 and later defamed her by publicly branding her a “liar” and accusing her of faking her injuries. A viral video of the incident showed heated confrontations between medical staff and the accused.

Her legal team maintains that the alleged assault left her unable to perform her duties. Williams, however, has denied wrongdoing.

The Health Minister is expected to study the committee’s report and announce the next line of action in the coming days.
