Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has issued a strong call for African politics to serve the needs of society rather than personal interests.
She emphasised the urgent need to transform the continent’s political systems to ensure citizens have access to security, employment, quality healthcare, and efficient infrastructure.
The Vice President made this call during the Africa Political Parties Summit 2025, held under the theme: “From Politics to Prosperity: Strengthening Inter-Party Collaboration for Africa’s Development and Economic Transformation.”
The summit brought together ministers of state and high-ranking government officials from across Africa to examine and address the continent’s political challenges. The event is scheduled to run from August 12 to August 14.
She urged political leaders to embrace the summit’s theme and develop long-term, generational policies that reflect the true needs of the people. She called for a shift from politics focused solely on the next election to policies centred on the well-being of the next generation.
“They deserve politics that translates into food security, decent jobs, functional schools, accessible healthcare, efficient infrastructure, security and justice. They expect us to focus not just on the election but more importantly on the next generation,” he stated.
The Vice President also underscored the importance of the three-day dialogue in promoting collaboration and developing strategic plans to tackle pressing issues such as climate change, regional security threats, and illicit trade.
She reiterated that Africa’s developmental needs are non-negotiable.
“We’ll not agree on everything, but if we can agree on the fundamentals that Africa’s peace, unity and well-being are non-negotiable, then we will already have taken a decisive step forward,” she stated.
