Cynthia Morrison Stands Firm on Independent Candidacy

Hon. Cynthia Morrison, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Agona West and former Gender Minister, has firmly denied rumours that she is reconsidering her decision to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 general elections.
Morrison’s declaration comes after Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin declared her seat, along with three others, vacant. This sparked widespread speculation that Morrison had rescinded her decision to run independently.

However, Morrison clarified her stance on the EKOSIISEN Show, stating she remains committed to her independent candidacy.
The clarification comes after photos surfaced showing her with some Majority members at Parliament’s Job 600 office on October 22, 2024 went viral on social media, misconstrued as a sign of her return to the NPP.

Morrison’s journey to independence began after losing the NPP primary to Christopher Arthur.
She expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s internal selection process, citing favoritism and lack of transparency.
Initially, an injunction was filed against Morrison’s candidacy due to residency concerns in Agona East. However, the court has since lifted the injunction, paving the way for her independent bid.
As the 2024 elections draw near, Morrison’s candidacy is expected to significantly impact the Agona West constituency. Her strong track record, having won the seat in 2016 with 58.03% of the votes, makes her a formidable contender.
In a recent statement, Morrison’s office debunked rumors of her withdrawal, stating, “Madam Morrison remains committed to serving her people and has not made any decision to withdraw her candidature. Any claims suggesting otherwise are attempts to distort facts and misinform the public.”
The statement urged the media and public to rely on official statements and verified sources for accurate information.
This development adds complexity to Ghana’s political landscape.
