Ursula Owusu-Ekuful Warns Against Lobbying for Running Mate Position

NPP Should Trust Bawumia's Judgment and Await His Decision

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Ghana’s Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, has urged party members and supporters to give Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the space to select his running mate for the December 7 election without external pressure.

According to Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, lobbying for the running mate position undermines Dr. Bawumia’s independence as a presidential candidate. In an interview with Accra-based Citi FM, she emphasized that the running mate position is an appointed one and should be left to the discretion of the flagbearer.

“The flagbearer should be given the space to choose who he thinks can best partner him. It’s not about lobbying or campaigning for the position; it’s about his vision for the country,” Ursula Owusu-Ekuful stated. “We should trust Dr. Bawumia’s judgment and allow him to make the decision that he believes will benefit the party and the country. He has a proven track record of making informed decisions, and I have no doubt that he will choose a running mate who shares his vision and values.”

The Minister also addressed speculation about her own potential as a running mate, stating, “People may speculate my name, but I have not approached anyone expressing interest. If the flagbearer thinks I can assist him, why not? But I have not lobbied for the position. My focus is on serving the government and the people of Ghana, not personal ambition. I am committed to supporting the party and the flagbearer, regardless of who is chosen as the running mate.”

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful’s comments come as calls intensify for Dr. Bawumia to select a female running mate, with Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Osei-Opare and Administrator of the District Assembly Common Fund, Naa Torshie, being mentioned as potential candidates.

“The NPP has a history of promoting gender equality, and I believe this election should be no different,” Ursula Owusu-Ekuful added. “A female running mate would be a great asset to the ticket, but ultimately, it’s up to Dr. Bawumia to decide. What’s important is that the party presents a united front and a strong team to contest the election. We need to work together to achieve victory in December.”

The Minister’s stance emphasizes the need to respect Dr. Bawumia’s decision-making authority as the presidential candidate, allowing him to choose a running mate who can best support his vision and boost his chances in the election. By doing so, the NPP can present a strong and united front in the upcoming election.

“Dr. Bawumia has a track record of inclusivity and diversity, and I have no doubt that he will choose a running mate who complements his strengths and weaknesses,” Ursula Owusu-Ekuful concluded. “Let’s support him to make the decision that he believes will lead the party to victory. We must remain united and focused on our goal of winning the election and serving Ghana.”
