NPP approves flagbearer as party leader

Delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have approved an amendment to the party’s constitution making an elected presidential candidate the leader of the party.
The amendment was approved through an oral vote at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026.
The motion, captured as Motion Number 10, amends Articles 10, 4, 1 and 13 of the party’s constitution to provide for the elected presidential candidate to assume leadership of the NPP.
Under the approved provision, when the party has an elected presidential candidate, the presidential candidate shall be the leader of the party.
Delegates also approved a related amendment clarifying the party’s leadership structure when the NPP is in government.
Under that provision, the President shall be the leader of the party while the NPP is in government, until a new presidential candidate is elected.
The amendments therefore establish different leadership arrangements depending on whether the NPP is in government or has an elected presidential candidate.
