NPP Propaganda Stopped Some Aggrieved Supporters From Voting For Me – Alan Kyerematen

United Party (UP) founder and leader Alan Kyerematen has said some aggrieved supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) did not vote for his Movement for Change in the 2024 general election because of a narrative that he could not form a government as an independent candidate.

He said the narrative was used to discourage voters who had become dissatisfied with the NPP from supporting his presidential bid.

Speaking on The Point of View on Monday, September 21, Kyerematen said some NPP sympathisers who were unhappy with the party were prepared to reject both the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), but were persuaded that voting for the Movement for Change would not be effective.

According to him, the argument that a government led by him would be unable to secure enough parliamentary seats to govern created doubts among some potential supporters.

“The narrative was that, yes, he has good credentials, but it is not likely that he can even have a government formed,” he said.

Mr Kyerematen said some of the affected voters consequently chose not to participate in the election rather than vote for either of the two main parties.

“If he cannot form a government, then we will not vote for NDC-NPP. If he cannot vote for Alan, then we will not vote at all,” he said, describing the position taken by some voters.

Mr Kyerematen also cited post-election reports associated with former Speaker of Parliament Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye and former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

He said the reports indicated that some NPP sympathisers had acknowledged that they did not vote in the election because of his departure from the party and the subsequent formation of the Movement for Change.
