ECOWAS To Donate $250k To Support Ghana Flood Victims

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is set to donate $250,000, equivalent to about GH¢3 million, to support victims of Ghana’s recent devastating floods.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the support in a Facebook post on Sunday August 2, stating that the ministry had received official notification from ECOWAS regarding the donation.

According to him, the funds are intended to provide relief assistance to individuals and communities affected by the floods.

Ablakwa assured the public that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would ensure transparency and accountability in the management of the funds, adding that the full amount would be transferred to the appropriate authorities immediately after it is received.

He expressed the government’s appreciation to ECOWAS for the gesture, describing it as a reflection of regional solidarity and African compassion during a difficult period for Ghana.

The pledge from ECOWAS comes after the June 29 floods, which affected several communities across seven regions of Ghana, leaving thousands of households displaced and causing extensive damage to homes, businesses and critical infrastructure.

The disaster also claimed about 13 lives, with affected residents requiring urgent support as authorities worked to assess the extent of the destruction and provide relief to victims.
