IMF to approve final review of Ghana’s bailout next week – Ato Forson

Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has announced that the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is expected to approve the final review of Ghana’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme next week.

According to him, the approval will mark the successful conclusion of the financial bailout programme secured by Ghana to restore macroeconomic stability.

Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament on Thursday, July 23, Dr Ato Forson said the country has made significant progress under the IMF-supported programme, paving the way for the transition into a new phase of reforms.

“Right Honourable Speaker, next week the Executive Board of the IMF is expected to approve the final review of Ghana’s Extended Credit Facility programme, bringing to a successful conclusion the financial bailout IMF programme.”

The Finance Minister also announced that the IMF Executive Board is expected to approve a 36-month Policy Coordination Instrument (PCI) for Ghana.

He explained that the PCI is a non-financing arrangement designed for countries that no longer have, and are not expected to face, balance of payment challenges.

According to Dr Ato Forson, the new framework will guide Ghana’s next phase of economic reforms by strengthening macroeconomic resilience, supporting broad-based growth and demonstrating the government’s commitment to sound fiscal management.

“The PCI will anchor our next phase of reforms, strengthening macroeconomic resilience, support broad-based growth and signal our unwavering commitment to sound and disciplined macroeconomic policy.”

He said the programme will focus on six priority areas, including maintaining growth-friendly fiscal consolidation, preserving debt sustainability, improving fiscal transparency and governance, enhancing monetary and exchange rate policy frameworks, strengthening financial sector stability and promoting economic diversification and inclusive growth.
