Interior Ministry Urges Ghanaians to Stay Indoors as Heavy Flooding Hits Several Parts of the Country

The Ministry of the Interior has issued an urgent public safety advisory following the heavy rains and widespread flooding that affected several parts of Ghana on Sunday morning.
In a statement signed by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Ministry urged the public to exercise extreme caution and avoid unnecessary movement until weather conditions improve.
According to the Ministry, residents who are safely at home should remain indoors, while those at their workplaces or other safe locations are advised to stay there until it is safe to travel.
Motorists and pedestrians have also been strongly warned against driving or walking through flooded roads, bridges, and waterways, as rapidly rising floodwaters pose a serious threat to lives and property.
To respond to the situation, the Government has deployed personnel from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Ghana Armed Forces, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and other emergency response agencies to monitor affected areas, manage traffic, assist victims, and conduct rescue operations where necessary.
The Ministry further advised residents living in flood-prone communities to relocate to higher ground whenever it is safe to do so and to promptly report emergencies or persons in distress to the appropriate authorities.
The public has also been encouraged to remain calm, cooperate with security and emergency personnel, and rely solely on official sources for updates and information regarding the flooding.
For emergency assistance, the Ministry provided the following contact numbers:
- Ghana Police Service: 18555 or 112
- Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS): 192
- National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO): 112
The Ministry emphasized that the safety and well-being of the public remain the Government’s highest priority and assured Ghanaians that authorities are closely monitoring the situation while making every effort to provide the necessary support to affected communities.
