Mahama Pledges Budgetary Support to Restore Cape Coast Castle

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will make adequate budgetary provisions in the next national budget to restore and preserve the Cape Coast Castle, reaffirming its commitment to protecting one of Ghana’s most important historical landmarks.

Speaking during his ResettingGhana Tour of the Central Region, the President described the castle as a powerful symbol of Ghana’s heritage and the global legacy of the transatlantic slave trade. He said preserving the site is essential to safeguarding history, promoting education, and strengthening Ghana’s cultural tourism.

President Mahama, accompanied by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie, visited the castle as a live theatrical reenactment of the transatlantic slave trade was underway.

The performance vividly portrayed the painful experiences of enslaved Africans, offering a moving reflection on one of history’s darkest chapters. It underscored the importance of preserving historical memory while reinforcing ongoing efforts to promote awareness and conversations on reparatory justice for people of African descent.

During the event, President Mahama also revealed that the School of Performing Arts has received an official invitation from the Prime Minister of Barbados to perform at the unveiling of the country’s Slavery Monument.

He described the invitation as a significant recognition of Ghana’s performing arts and its contribution to preserving and sharing the history of the African diaspora through culture and storytelling.

The President’s visit to Cape Coast Castle formed part of his broader working tour of the Central Region, where he is inspecting development projects and engaging residents under the government’s ResettingGhana agenda.
