Assin South DCE Visits Relocated Assin Andoe Market Traders, Assures Them of Better Facilities
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Assin South District, Hon. Jonathan Birikorang, on Wednesday, 20th May 2026, paid a working visit to the newly relocated Assin Andoe Market to interact with traders and assess conditions at the new market site.
The visit formed part of efforts by the District Assembly to monitor the progress of traders who were recently moved from the old market site to pave way for the construction of the government’s proposed 24-hour economy market project.
Yesterday marked the fifth market day since the relocation to the new site, and many traders appeared to have settled in well despite a few challenges confronting them.
During the interaction, the market women expressed their appreciation to the DCE and the District Assembly for providing them with a more spacious and accessible location for their business activities.
According to them, the new market site offers enough space for both traders and vehicles to move freely, unlike the old market area which was heavily congested during market days.
Some traders also noted that business activities have become more organized at the new site, making it easier for customers to move around and purchase goods without difficulty.
Others further stated that they are satisfied with the new location and would not want to be relocated again because they have already become comfortable at the site.
Despite their appreciation, the traders appealed to the DCE to help address some pressing challenges affecting the market. They mentioned the lack of electricity, absence of washroom facilities, poor lighting at night, and the need for dustbins to improve sanitation and maintain cleanliness at the market.
A number of the traders also appealed for continuous support from the Assembly to help improve security and infrastructure at the new market center as trading activities continue to grow.
Responding to the concerns raised, Hon. Jonathan Birikorang assured the traders that the Assembly is committed to addressing the challenges to ensure a safe and conducive trading environment for everyone.
On the issue of electricity, the DCE revealed that he has already engaged the manager of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to facilitate the installation of lighting systems at the market.
He further emphasized that the relocation exercise is part of broader development plans aimed at improving trading activities and creating a modern market environment that will support the government’s 24-hour economy initiative.
The DCE encouraged the traders to continue cooperating with the Assembly during the transition period and assured them that their welfare remains a top priority.
The visit ended with the DCE interacting warmly with some traders and observing activities across various sections of the market.
