MTN Ghana Foundation Commissions GH¢15.4 Million Emergency Centre at Ho Teaching Hospital

The MTN Ghana Foundation has officially unveiled a newly expanded Accident and Emergency Centre at the Ho Teaching Hospital in the Volta Region, in a move expected to significantly strengthen emergency healthcare delivery in the area.

The facility, valued at GH¢15.4 million, was handed over during a ceremony on March 5, 2026, drawing commendation from the James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister. He described the project as a transformative investment that will greatly improve critical healthcare services across the region.

Speaking at the event, the Minister praised the Foundation for its commitment to supporting healthcare development, noting that strengthening emergency services is vital for the region’s growth and aligns with government efforts to ensure quality healthcare for all Ghanaians.

The Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer of MTN Ghana, Adwoa Wiafe, reiterated the Foundation’s dedication to improving access to healthcare.

“Health is essential. It is everyone’s right, not just a privilege or a gift. We must all share in this responsibility,” she stated.

She explained that the upgraded Accident and Emergency Centre was built to international standards and will help reduce congestion, improve patient flow and enhance emergency response in the region.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ho Teaching Hospital, Dr. Hintermann K. K. Mbroh, described the project as a major boost to emergency healthcare delivery. According to him, the emergency department serves as the hospital’s frontline for urgent medical cases, and the upgraded facility will allow health professionals to deliver faster and more effective life-saving interventions.

He also highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships in strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system and commended the MTN Ghana Foundation for its continued investment in health infrastructure.

Chairman of the hospital’s board, Dr. Delanyo Dovlo, said the new centre represents a major milestone in the hospital’s quest to become a centre of excellence for clinical care and medical training.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Lydia Aziato, also called for deeper collaboration to expand specialised healthcare services, including cardiac and maternal health care. She noted that modern health infrastructure plays a critical role in improving patient outcomes while supporting the training of future health professionals.

The expanded 30-bed Accident and Emergency Centre is equipped with modern medical equipment including patient and cardiac monitors, portable ultrasound machines, defibrillators with pacemaker capabilities, electrocardiogram (ECG) machines, ventilators and arterial blood gas analysers.

Additional equipment includes haematology and biochemistry analysers, blood storage refrigerators, infusion pumps, suction devices, crash carts and blood warmers. The facility also contains hospital beds, stretchers and examination lamps. To enhance accessibility for critically ill patients and persons with disabilities, the building is fitted with an elevator.

Hospital management has been encouraged to ensure proper maintenance of the facility to guarantee its long-term sustainability and continued delivery of quality emergency care.

The new centre is expected to improve emergency response in the region, reduce referrals to other hospitals and increase survival rates for patients in critical conditions.

The MTN Ghana Foundation has previously supported several development projects in the Volta Region, including the construction of a 60-bed maternity and neonatal intensive care unit at the Keta Municipal Hospital, upgrades to the Kpedze Health Centre and the provision of a potable water system for the Kpeve community.

Dignitaries present at the ceremony included Togbe Kasa, representing the Asogli Traditional Council, and Samuel Koranteng, a Board Member of the MTN Ghana Foundation, as well as representatives from the security services.
