The Edina Traditional Council has officially launched the 2026 edition of the revered Bakatue Festival at the historic Anomansa (Elmina) Palace, setting the stage for one of Ghana’s most celebrated cultural events.
The launch ceremony, held on 24th February at 9:00 AM, brought together traditional leaders, tourism stakeholders, community members, and invited guests to mark the formal commencement of activities leading to the grand festival.
The event was chaired by Nana Oworaba Obentsen, Royal Ambassador for Central Region Tourism, who emphasized the importance of preserving Edina’s cultural identity while leveraging the festival to promote tourism and economic growth in the Central Region.
The speech of the Guest of Honour, Maame Efua-Aidoo Houadjeto, CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, was read on her behalf. In the address, she reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to supporting traditional festivals that showcase Ghana’s rich heritage to the world, noting that Bakatue remains a key cultural and tourism asset that attracts visitors from across the country and beyond.
Bakatue, meaning “the opening of the lagoon,” symbolizes the beginning of the fishing season in Edina. The festival is deeply rooted in the history and traditions of the people of Elmina, featuring vibrant durbars, canoe processions, traditional rites, music, and dance.
The official launch signals the start of preparations for what promises to be a colourful and culturally enriching celebration. Organizers have assured the public of an exciting lineup of activities that will highlight the pride, unity, and resilience of the Edina people.
As anticipation builds, residents and visitors alike are encouraged to participate fully in the upcoming festivities and experience the enduring spirit of Edina
