Assin South DCE Pledges to Tackle Infrastructure Deficit at Adankwaman SHS.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Assin South, Hon. Jonathan Birikorang, popularly known as Joe Tee, has assured the management of Adankwaman Senior High School of government and Assembly support to address the school’s serious infrastructure challenges.
Speaking at the inauguration of the newly constituted Board of Governors of Adankwaman SHS on Wednesday, February 11, Hon. Joe Tee disclosed that he has already written to GETFund and other relevant institutions to seek support for the development of the school. He further stated that, as part of immediate interventions, the Assembly has provided the school with a mechanised water system and pledged to continue lobbying for more projects to improve teaching and learning conditions.
The Headmaster of the school, Nana Agyei Baffour VI, appealed to government and other stakeholders to urgently come to the aid of the school in terms of infrastructure. He noted that although Adankwaman SHS is a Category B school with an enrolment of about 1,400 students, it suffers from severe infrastructure deficits. He stressed that among the four senior high schools in the Assin South District, Adankwaman SHS is the only Category B school, yet remains one of the most deprived in terms of facilities.
Chairman of the occasion and Chief of Assin Darmang, Nana Kojo Benti IV, also expressed concern about the state of infrastructure at the school. He revealed that the traditional council and chiefs in the area have been making efforts to support development at the school but acknowledged that they cannot shoulder the responsibility alone. He therefore appealed to government, old students, corporate bodies and other benevolent institutions to support the school. He also urged the DCE to intensify his lobbying efforts to attract more development projects to Adankwaman SHS.
The Central Regional Director of Education, Dr. Juliet Duffie Otame, on her part, cautioned students of the school to be disciplined, avoid bad influences and take their academic work seriously. She commended the staff of Adankwaman SHS for their dedication, which has helped the school attain Category B status, and encouraged them to maintain high standards of discipline, particularly among the teaching staff.
The inauguration of the Board of Governors is expected to strengthen collaboration between the school’s management and key stakeholders to help address the pressing challenges confronting Adankwaman SHS, especially in the area of infrastructure.
Community members and old students present at the ceremony also called for sustained attention to the school’s needs, noting that inadequate classroom space, staff accommodation and limited learning facilities continue to affect academic work. They expressed hope that the intervention of GETFund and other development partners would translate into visible projects that would improve the learning environment and raise academic performance in the school.
