Fibre Optic Cable Cuts Affect Network Reliability – Mr. Cofie

MTN Ghana has held a media and stakeholder engagement session in Elmina, Central Region, focusing on strengthening relationships with key stakeholders and discussing the company’s services, achievements, successes, and challenges. The event brought together journalists, stakeholders, and MTN officials to map out the future of digital transformation, particularly how MTN envisions its role.

The company has undertaken several corporate social responsibility initiatives, including constructing classrooms, dormitories, and ICT centers for schools and prisons, supporting blood banks at Cape Coast Teaching Hospital and Winneba Trauma Hospital, offering full scholarships for thousands of tertiary students and 200 teachers, and donating to traditional councils during festivals. MTN’s “Yellow Care” initiative also supports infants in hospitals.

Speaking at the event, the General Manager for Network Operations, Mr. Magnus Coffie, expressed deep concern over the persistent fibre optic cable cuts affecting network reliability in the country. He highlighted the impact of these cuts on communication, business, and security.

According to Mr. Coffie, the fibre cuts are largely caused by road construction activities across the country. “Anytime there is road expansion or clearing, our fibre cables laid along road reserves get damaged,” he explained. This results in significant disruptions to MTN’s services, affecting customers and businesses alike.

Mr. Coffie revealed that MTN spends an average of 20 million cedis annually to relocate fibre infrastructure damaged by road construction activities. These funds, he noted, could be better invested in expanding MTN’s services to underserved areas. To mitigate the impact of fibre cuts, Mr. Coffie called for stronger collaboration between telcos and construction firms. “Before any project starts, we urge contractors to engage with the Telecoms Chamber so we can relocate infrastructure safely and avoid disruptions,” he said.

Despite the challenges, MTN remains committed to providing quality, reliable service to its customers. The company is investing in new technologies, increasing coverage, and capacity to support the growth of businesses, communities, and events like festivals.

Mr. Reuben Opata, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of MTN Ghana, highlighted the company’s strategic pillars, including building valuable platforms, driving industry-leading connectivity operations, creating shared value, and accelerating portfolio transformation. He emphasized MTN’s commitment to delivering on its promise to connect people, communities, and businesses in meaningful ways.

The forum showcased the impact of MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) and the MyMTN App on financial inclusion, digital payments, and customer convenience. Discussions focused on key milestones, operational challenges, and efforts to combat MoMo fraud, a top priority for the company.

Kingsley Nana Boadu, Central Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association, lauded MTN for being the only telecom company to organize such a media engagement in the Central Region. However, he appealed to MTN to extend its support to journalists, similar to its assistance to students and other groups.
