Heavy Rainstorm Devastates Adankwaman SHS, Buildings Destroyed

Adankwaman Senior High School in the Assin South District of the Central Region faces possible closure following a devastating rainstorm that has destroyed key school infrastructure just days before reopening.

The heavy downpour, accompanied by strong winds, ripped off the roofs of several buildings including a 6-unit classroom block, boys’ dormitory, dining hall, and pavilions. Desks, teaching materials, and other school property were also destroyed in the process.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, 7th October 2025, after a rainstorm that lasted for a few hours.

Although students are currently on vacation and no casualties were recorded, school authorities fear the damage may force a postponement of reopening, which is scheduled for Saturday, 11th October 2025. The affected structures are now unfit for use, and there are currently no alternative spaces to accommodate teaching and learning activities.

The school, which was established over 40 years ago, still relies on some mud-built structures, many of which have weakened over time and are vulnerable to disasters like this.

Speaking to the media, members of the school’s management committee and some teaching staff described the situation as dire. They are calling on the government, Ghana Education Service, NGOs, and philanthropic individuals to come to their aid with urgent support to restore the damaged buildings and provide safer facilities for the students.

“This is a major setback. Without immediate help, we cannot reopen the school safely. The buildings are not just damaged, they are dangerous,” a committee member said.

Meanwhile, a team from the Assin South District office of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has visited the school to assess the extent of the damage. NADMO officials described the situation as alarming and promised to submit a full report to the appropriate authorities for immediate intervention.

Residents and parents have also joined the call for support, urging swift action to prevent any interruption in the academic calendar and to ensure the safety of returning students.
