Sunyani West NPP Executive Blasts Bawumia, Says He “Lacks Credibility” for 2028

Story By: Mr. Isaac Agyare

A prominent New Patriotic Party (NPP) executive in the Sunyani West constituency has launched a scathing critique against Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, stating the former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer is not fit to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.

In a stark and unexpected rebuke, Second Vice Chairman Isaac Agyare pointed to Dr. Bawumia’s famous pre-2016 statement that “if the fundamentals are weak, the exchange rate will expose you” as a phrase that has now come back to haunt him.

According to Mr. Agyare, the statement is an undeniable economic principle meaning that poor underlying economic health will inevitably be revealed through a currency’s depreciation. He argued that Dr. Bawumia’s tenure as Vice President and head of the Economic Management Team failed to live up to the credibility the phrase implied.

“When he became the vice president, under his tenure he didn’t show anything that proved his credibility,” Agyare stated. “These phrases came back hunting and we saw the cedi performing poorly. We saw everything which made it difficult for us, the party sympathizers and communicators, to even defend when we were on radio and media platforms.”

Agyare emphasized his loyalty to the NPP but insisted that “truth needs to be told,” concluding that “Dr. Bawumia lacks credibility and the will to lead us into the 2028 general elections.”

The criticism extends beyond economic management to the party’s stunning electoral defeat in the 2024 presidential race. Agyare highlighted the significant margin of loss to President John Mahama as a direct repudiation of Dr. Bawumia’s leadership and a stark contrast to the image of integrity the former Vice President had projected.

“Before the election, Dr. Bawumia asked and bragged about, between John Mahama and him, who has the integrity,” Agyare recalled. “Yet on election day we saw a different thing a defeat historically. Now it is time we speak out, and I still maintain my point is he, Dr. Bawumia, lacks the credibility to lead us.”
