Man sues doctor, private hospital over wife’s death during childbirth

An Ashaiman resident, Clement Frimpong, has taken legal action against a medical doctor and a private hospital over the death of his wife, Naomi Okyere, after complications during childbirth.
Filed at the High Court in Gbetsile on August 25, 2025, the lawsuit names Dr. Clement Oppong and Graceyard Hospital, located at Mataheko-Afienya, as defendants. Frimpong is demanding GH₵2 million in damages, GH₵1.5 million for wrongful death and emotional trauma, and GH₵500,000 for the care of their three children.
According to the suit, Naomi Okyere had been receiving antenatal care at the Ashaiman Municipal Hospital, where Dr. Oppong also works. He later referred her to his private facility, Graceyard Hospital, claiming it would offer better care.
Naomi was admitted to Graceyard Hospital on November 7, 2024, and underwent a Cesarean section the next day. Frimpong says her condition worsened due to severe anaemia, but the doctor continued blood transfusions over four days without investigating the cause or seeking specialist help. He alleges that a timely referral to a more advanced hospital was not made until November 12, 2024 by which time it was too late. Naomi died six hours after arriving at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
The death certificate listed severe anaemia and internal bleeding following the surgery as causes of death.
Frimpong claims Dr. Oppong acted negligently, failed to manage the situation properly, and delayed necessary referrals. He also believes the decision to transfer his wife from the public hospital to the private one was influenced by financial gain. He accuses Graceyard Hospital of falling below acceptable healthcare standards.
He is also calling for the Medical and Dental Council to revoke Dr. Oppong’s license and for the Health Facilities Regulatory Authority to shut down the hospital.
The case is being handled by Liz-Martins Law Consult. The defendants have eight days from the date of service to respond, or judgment may be entered against them.
