Bryan Acheampong’s Remarks on 2024 Election Misinterpreted – Andy Appiah-Kubi

Story By: William Mintah Hayford

Lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi, a strategic campaign adviser to New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has dismissed claims that the Abetifi legislator engaged in tribal or religious propaganda against former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking in an interview with broadcast journalist Kwaku Mintah Hayford on Assin Foso-based Rich FM, Mr. Appiah-Kubi clarified that Dr. Acheampong’s comments about the NPP’s 2024 electoral defeat were being misrepresented by Bawumia’s camp in an attempt to court sympathy from party delegates ahead of the 2026 presidential primaries.

According to him, Dr. Acheampong merely pointed out the obvious reality that the party had expected to gain significant support in the north, given that Dr. Bawumia was not only a native of the region but also a Muslim. However, the party’s poor performance in those areas came as a surprise and needed honest reflection rather than denial.

“The truth is that the expectation of the party was very high in the northern regions because our candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is from there and also a Muslim. Unfortunately, we lost critical votes in those very areas, and that is a fact Bryan Acheampong highlighted. It is not propaganda, it is not bigotry, it is simply the obvious,” Appiah-Kubi explained.

He further stressed that Dr. Acheampong’s remarks were not intended to attack Dr. Bawumia personally but to draw attention to the circumstances that contributed to the NPP’s electoral loss.

“Dr. Bawumia became a victim of circumstances, and that reality should not be overlooked. Instead of twisting the narrative, his camp should accept the facts and join the collective effort to rebuild the party,” he added.

Mr. Appiah-Kubi also cautioned against arrogance and unnecessary divisions within the NPP, which he said were partly responsible for the party’s fall into opposition. He called on all aspirants, supporters, and party leaders to focus on unity and truth, rather than divisive interpretations of campaign messages.

“Our priority must be party cohesion. If we allow arrogance and misrepresentation to dominate our internal politics, we risk weakening the NPP even further. What we need now is unity, honesty, and a clear focus on returning the party to power,” he emphasized.
