Assaulted Ridge Hospital nurse sues Ralph Williams for GHS7m

A nurse at Ridge Hospital, Rejoice Tsotso Bortei, has filed a GHS 7 million lawsuit against activist Ralph Saint Williams, popularly known as “Ralph De Fellow Ghanaian,” following a violent altercation at the hospital’s emergency department.

The incident, which was captured in a viral video, involved clashes between some relatives of a patient and medical staff, raising serious concerns about the safety of health workers on duty.

According to a writ of summons sighted by Channel One News on Friday, August 22, Bortei alleges that Williams physically assaulted her and made defamatory statements after the chaos on Sunday, August 17.

Filed at the High Court in Accra on August 20, 2025, the lawsuit seeks GHS 5 million for battery and GHS 2 million for defamation.

Her legal team claims Williams attacked her during the hospital incident, leaving her with a dislocated shoulder and an injured hand, which have affected her ability to perform her duties.

Bortei also alleges that Williams publicly insulted her, calling her a “liar” and accusing her of faking the injuries to cover up problems at the hospital. He reportedly said:

“Liar, wo se wo nsam abu. Duabɔ bebam. You say you have suffered an injured hand and a dislocated shoulder. This is cooked up to cover the nonsense going on at the hospital.”

The nurse maintains that these remarks have harmed her reputation and subjected her to public ridicule.

Through her lawyer, Charles Delali Blagogee, Bortei is also requesting the court to:

  • A public apology and retraction of the defamatory statements in the same medium and with equal prominence.
  • A perpetual injunction preventing Williams from making further defamatory remarks.
  • A 50-meter restraining order against Williams.
  • Legal costs and any other reliefs deemed appropriate by the court.

Williams has eight days from being served to respond, or risk a default judgment.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has given a one-week deadline to a newly constituted committee investigating assaults on health workers at Ridge Hospital.
