From Filth to Fresh: UEW Students Transform Winneba Market

Winneba, Ghana – As part of their project work, Level 200 students from the Faculty of African Studies at the University of Education undertook a sanitation-focused community service project at the Winneba Central Market. The subgroup of students, driven by their passion for community development, chose the market as the ideal location for their clean-up exercise.
The market, which serves as a hub for local trade, had become an eyesore due to the accumulation of filth and debris. Armed with brooms, rakes, and gloves, the students joined forces with the market vendors to rid the market of dirt, trash, and unwanted materials.

The clean-up exercise, which lasted for several hours, saw the market transformed into a cleaner and more hygienic environment. But the students didn’t stop there. In a gesture of goodwill, they donated 10 standing brooms and 4 rakes to the market women to facilitate their weekly clean-up exercises.
This donation is expected to empower the market women to maintain the cleanliness of the market, thereby promoting a healthier environment for traders and customers alike. The project, which forms part of the students’ academic requirements, aimed to promote community service, teamwork, and social responsibility among students.
By embarking on this project, the students demonstrated their commitment to giving back to their community and promoting sustainable development. The market women, who were visibly grateful for the students’ efforts, praised their initiative and expressed their willingness to work together to maintain the market’s cleanliness.

As the University of Education continues to churn out graduates who are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to drive positive change in their communities, this project serves as a shining example of the institution’s commitment to community engagement and social responsibility.
