Ashanti Regional Minister Vows to Continue Fight Against Galamsey

Kumasi, Ashanti Region – March 24, 2025, The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has announced the successful deployment of a combined Anti-Galamsey Taskforce in the Atwima Mponua District. The taskforce, comprising personnel from National Security, the Police, and the Forestry Commission, carried out operations at Offin Shelterbelt and Kotokum.

According to Dr. Amoakohene, the team encountered a violent ambush by armed illegal miners at Offin Shelterbelt, who attacked members of the Forestry Commission’s Rapid Response team. One officer was severely injured after being slashed in the knee with a machete and is currently in critical condition at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
“The thugs were armed with assault rifles and machetes, and their tactics reveal how dangerous this fight against illegal mining has become,” Dr. Amoakohene said. “Following publicity and initial coverage on the media, many of the perpetrators fled the area before capture. However, their hideouts have been cleared, and the illegal miners flushed out.”

Dr. Amoakohene added that all the forest reserves in the area have now been cleared of illegal mining activity. The operation also led to the dismantling of illegal mining activities at Kotokum, which were hindering the construction of a vital bridge. The bridge’s construction is now progressing smoothly.
The taskforce seized several items, including 9 control boards, 6 excavator paddles, 7 batteries, and a fuse board. Dr. Amoakohene commended the bravery of the taskforce, emphasizing that the fight against galamsey will continue unabated.

“We commend the bravery of our taskforce. The fight against galamsey continues—and we will not relent,” Dr. Amoakohene said.
This operation demonstrates the government’s commitment to combating illegal mining and protecting the environment. The Ashanti Regional Minister’s leadership in this effort is a testament to his dedication to the region’s development and well-being.
