Assin South; Nua-Nua Fantse JHS Students Forced to Study Under Trees

Story by Kwame Owusu Asante Shadrack

A devastating rainstorm has left students of Nua-Nua Fantse Basic School in the Assin South District of the Central Region with no choice but to attend classes under trees. The storm, which swept through the area, destroyed the school block, leaving students without a classroom.

According to eyewitnesses, the strong winds that accompanied the rain ripped off the roof of the school building, causing extensive damage to the structure. The walls and pillars of the building were also left with cracks, while furniture and teaching materials were exposed to the elements.

Mr. Peter Komladza, the Headteacher of the school, expressed his concern about the situation, stating that the lack of a classroom has severely impacted teaching and learning. “We are currently conducting classes under trees, but this is not a sustainable solution,” he said. “We urgently need a new classroom block to ensure that our students can learn in a safe and conducive environment.”

The headteacher appealed to the government, the regional minister, and the Assin South District Assembly to come to the aid of the school. “We need a new JHS block, and we need it now,” he emphasized. “We cannot continue to teach our students under trees. It’s not fair to them, and it’s not fair to the community.”

The rainstorm also affected several households in the area, leaving residents counting their losses. The community is calling on old students, the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, and other stakeholders to support the school in its time of need.

Honourable Timothy Sakyi, the Assemblymember for Assin Adiembra-Nuanua Electoral Area, outlined the measures being taken to address the situation. “We are working closely with the school authorities and the district assembly to find a solution to this problem,” he said. “We appeal to the public to support us in any way they can.”

As the students of Nua-Nua Fantse Basic School continue to learn under trees, the community remains hopeful that help will arrive soon. Until then, the students will have to endure the harsh weather conditions and the challenges that come with learning in a non-traditional setting.
