Election Tensions Rise in Assin South as Communities Protest Abandoned Bridge

Story By: Kwame Owusu Asante Shadrack

18 communities in Assin South District, including Assin Adadientam Nō 1, 2, and 3, Owonta, Abodweseso, and others, are threatening to boycott the 2024 general election and block the roads linking the various communities on the election day if the abandoned bridge connecting the communities is not fixed.

This bridge has been in disrepair for four years, causing difficulties for residents, drivers, and commuters.

The situation escalated when an articulated truck carrying 650 bags got stuck while trying to maneuver an alternative route.

They expressed outrage over the alarming number of fatal accidents that have occurred due to the bridge’s deplorable state, emphasizing that these tragedies could have been avoided if the bridge had been properly maintained.

The over 1,500 residents said they are frustrated, feeling neglected by the government, and see no point in voting if they don’t benefit from it.

The residents are therefore appealing to local authorities, specifically Member of Parliament Hon. Rev. John Ntim Fordjour and District Chief Executive Hon. Felicia Amissah Ntrakwah, to step in and ensure the contractor completes the abandoned project, thereby alleviating the community’s plight.

Meanwhile, Hon. Simon Mensah, the Assemblyman for Assin Adadientam Abodweseso Electoral Area, on his part, said he has written several letters to the authorities, drawing attention to the abandoned bridge, but all his efforts have proven futile.
