Odeefuo Tibu Darko Ampem Calls for Unity to Drive Development

Odeefuo Tibu Darko Ampem II, the revered Omanhene of Assin Atandansu Traditional Area, has called for unity among his people to drive development and progress.

Addressing a grand durbar to celebrate Emancipation Day, the Omanhene emphasized the need for collective effort in achieving true freedom and emancipation. “Unity is the key to unlocking our full potential,” he stressed. “When we come together, we can achieve far more than we can alone.”

The durbar was held at the Assin Praso Heritage Site, which marks the end of the British protectorate in the Gold Coast (now Ghana) during the colonial era. The site is also where the British encamped to fight against the powerful Ashanti Kingdom in the Anglo-Ashanti wars.

Odeefuo Tibu Darko reflected on the significance of Emancipation Day, urging his people to remember their history and work towards a brighter future. “Let us unite and build a stronger, more prosperous community,” he said. “Together, we can overcome any obstacle and achieve greatness.”

The Omanhene also highlighted the economic benefits of emancipation, noting that it can stimulate economic growth. “Just as selling a product can bring income, emancipation can bring prosperity,” he explained. “When we are free and united, we can create opportunities and drive economic growth.”

The durbar featured traditional music, dance, and cultural performances, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Assin Praso community. Prominent personalities, including government officials, traditional leaders, and community elders, attended the event.

The Heritage Site, where the durbar was held, is also home to the remains of the British castle, where soldiers and their armory were stationed. The site also contains a cemetery with graves of British Camp commandants, their families, British soldiers, and captured slaves who died in Assin Praso during the Anglo-Ashanti battles.

Additionally, the site features ancient mango trees, where slaves were once tied before being transported to Assin Manso to be sold or taken to Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle further south, embarking on a journey of no return across the Atlantic.

Odeefuo Tibu Darko’s call for unity serves as a reminder of the importance of working together towards a common goal. As the community celebrates their emancipation, they are also embracing the Omanhene’s vision for a united and prosperous future.
