Ofori Asiamah Calls for Unified Public Transport System in Africa

In a call to action, Ghana’s Minister of Transport, Kweku Ofori Asiamah, has urged African nations to come together to build a more robust public transport system. This move aims to alleviate the burden on commuters and ensure smooth operations, free from exploitation by transport operators.

Speaking at the 2024 African Public Service Optimum (APSO) Conference and Awards night in Accra, Mr. Asiamah emphasized the need for legislation and regulation to prevent transport operators from overcharging commuters. He stressed that while operators deserve fair compensation, regulation is crucial to prevent exploitation.

The minister highlighted the challenges faced by the transport sector in Africa, including insufficient infrastructure and unregulated operators who prioritize profits over passenger safety and affordability. He cited the Matatus industry in East Africa as an example, where safety and affordability are significant concerns.

Mr. Asiamah emphasized the need for a balanced approach that allows transport operators to earn a fair income while protecting commuters from exploitation. By implementing laws and strengthening institutions, Africa can build a more robust public transport system that prioritizes commuter welfare and safety.

The minister’s call to action comes as Africa seeks to transform its public services through professionalism and excellence. The APSO Conference and Awards night recognized outstanding public institutions and public servants who have demonstrated excellence in delivering public goods and services.

With the theme “Transforming Africa through public service professionalism and excellence,” the event fostered cooperation and working relationships among award-winning institutions and public officials across Africa. Attendees included ambassadors, ministers, traditional rulers, and diplomats from across the continent.

By prioritizing commuter welfare and safety, Africa can work towards a more equitable and sustainable transportation sector. Mr. Asiamah’s call to action is a step towards a united and robust public transport system that benefits all Africans.

The minister’s vision for a unified public transport system aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which aims to promote economic growth, social development, and integration across the continent. By investing in public transport infrastructure and regulation, Africa can reduce transportation costs, increase access to employment and education, and enhance regional trade and economic integration.

As the continent moves forward, the need for a robust public transport system becomes increasingly urgent. With a growing population and urbanization, Africa must prioritize sustainable transportation solutions that benefit all citizens, not just the affluent few. Mr. Asiamah’s call to action is a crucial step towards achieving this goal.

The benefits of a unified public transport system extend beyond commuter welfare and safety. It can also promote economic growth, reduce congestion and pollution, and enhance Africa’s global competitiveness. By working together, African nations can create a transportation sector that is modern, efficient, and sustainable.

Finally, Mr. Asiamah’s call to action is a clarion call to African nations to prioritize the development of a robust public transport system. By working together, we can create a transportation sector that benefits all Africans and promotes economic growth, social development, and integration across the continent.
