Akufo-Addo Urges Journalists to Prioritize Truth and Fairness

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on journalists to prioritize truth and fairness in their reporting, especially as the country approaches the December general elections.
Speaking at the 28th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards, he emphasized the crucial role of a free press in democratic governance.

“The role of the journalist is to provide clarity, not confusion; to inform, not to inflame,” President Akufo-Addo said. “You must be the gatekeepers of truth, ensuring that fact prevails over falsehood.”
The President acknowledged the challenges posed by social media and the spread of misinformation but urged journalists to remain committed to the principles of truth, fairness, impartiality, and objectivity.
“In the age of social media, where information travels faster, journalists must rise to the occasion by being the gatekeepers of truth,” he said.
President Akufo-Addo also emphasized the importance of a vibrant media in promoting transparency, accountability, and participation in democracy. He praised the efforts of journalists and reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring their safety.
The GJA Media Awards recognized outstanding journalists, including Edward Adeti, who won the P.A.V. Ansah Journalist of the Year award. Other winners included Edward Acquah, Beatrice Senadju, Clinton Yeboah, and Seth Bokpe.
In her remarks, Minister for Information Fatimatu Abubakar urged the media to maintain impartiality in reporting on the upcoming elections. GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour called on political actors to establish proper channels for addressing grievances regarding media coverage.
The event was part of the GJA’s 75th-anniversary celebration, which aimed to promote excellence in journalism and highlight the critical role of the media in democratic governance.
